A 24-year-old Delhi Police SWAT commando has died after being brutally assaulted by her husband, turning what began as a domestic dispute into a murder investigation, police said. The victim, identified as Kajal Chaudhary, succumbed to severe head injuries on Tuesday morning at a private hospital in Ghaziabad, marking a tragic end to a case that unfolded over five days.
The assault took place on January 22 at the couple’s home in Mohan Garden, southwest Delhi, where Kajal was allegedly attacked by her husband, Ankur Chaudhary (28), during an argument that escalated over financial matters and alleged dowry demands. The incident was witnessed in part through a phone call to her brother, who heard screaming before the call was cut off.
According to police and family accounts, Kajal was struck repeatedly on the head with a heavy metal dumbbell and her head was slammed against a door frame, inflicting life-threatening injuries. Her brother, Nikhil, a fellow constable in the Delhi Police, recounted how Ankur called him during the attack and later confessed to killing his wife, allegedly directing him to come and claim the body.
Kajal was initially admitted to a private hospital near Dwarka and later shifted to a facility in Nehru Nagar, Ghaziabad, where she was treated for severe head trauma. Despite medical efforts, she succumbed to her injuries around 6 am on January 27, senior officers confirmed. Police arrested Ankur on the night of the assault and originally registered a case of attempted murder. Following Kajal’s death, authorities converted the charges to murder and continue to investigate the circumstances, with family members alleging harassment related to dowry and financial disputes.
